Probably is meant to be like this and thast's fine. But on first use, once the cooker had got reasonably hot inuse, the very flimsy platic knob broke inside where it attaches to the switch shaft as soon as it was turned. It's a very light weight plastic silver plated knob that's really not up to the job. It's a shame because the rest of the slow cooker is very solid and well made. I'd rather have paid £5 more and had a decent knob, it would then have been an excellent product. I don't want the hassle of sending something as big as the whole slow cooker and tried to contct Amazon to just send the kob back but it looks like that's not an option. What I will do is buy a decent quality solid knob and put that on instead. It's a standard sized control switch shaft. Update! Replacement received. Chipped and marks on bottom too.
When I got the new one, used it a few times for making soup and pulled pork- the ceramic bowl started to crack so that has been replaced and seems to be fine now.
I had the old swan cooker and it had the metal bowl insert that I prefer to this ceramic/stone style, as you could use it on the stove and in the oven.
I'm not to keen on the new style and the bowl is quite heavy so I'm usually paranoid I'm going to drop it and smash it.
